Teresa Martin BA hons PGCE studied sculpture at Winchester School of Art, renowned for pushing the boundaries of sculptural practice, shehas worked extremely hard in her career to make the creativity accessible to all. Now we PLAY !!!

Inspirations for sculpture projects 2024. Spoiler Alert !!! According to Jane Austen's family, in her proposed story, they " fell in love over seaweed". The plot of this version is much more genteel and Austenlike, in my opinion.
This book is my much read and favourite completion of “Sanditon”. Rumoured to be based on the plot Jane discussed with family before she died, the role of seaweed in uniting 2 characters, is not really surprising to creative folk. There is nothing quite like studying fascinating forms and natural structures and experimenting with materials to express something about them to make visual and emotional connections with our fellow beings !
Last year my sculpture group enjoyed making an installation of a Regency Ball, such as in the local Assembly rooms in Worthing where Jane visited the seaside. Worthing in Sussex was famous for the whiff of its beaches from the weed washed up after the storms off the coast. And now it is becoming a big talking point for the revival of the natural kelp forest off the bay of Sussex, which is helping to trap carbon emissions. This year we are creating a hanging garden or floating canopy of foliage inspired by the seaweed Adela loved so much, as well as other organic forms. There may well also be some sculpted characters exploring the sculptured kelp-like forest, frolicking for the love of the seaside and the novels it has inspired.
If you would like to follow our progress, or see the final installation in Sussex, in the Spring of 2024, send me a message for more details. If you would like to join the creators in Worthing, we start on 18th January 10.30 am, at the Chalk House Distillery, 24A, Upper High Street, Worthing, West Sussex. BN11 1DL .

Suitable for beginners or for more experienced sculptors wanting a quirky challenge and some social enjoyment.

Tissues of lies, whispers of gossip, good eggs and bad…. All can be found in the exhilarating atmosphere of a Regency Ball.

Fluttering flirtation, futures secured. All of life’s business was gambled at a ball, accompanied by local musicians.

It’s amazing what can be evoked with a bit of tissue and egg box pulp!

Members of the sculpture group chose aspects or characters to depict, some comic, many eccentric and some evolved their human presence through the qualities of the materials alone.

Each year students re invent armature wire, reincarnating new forms.

This year we explored the rustle and bustle of a  Regency Ball, such as Jane Austen may have enjoyed in Worthing Assembly Rooms whilst she stayed in sunny Sussex-by-the-Sea. There she was likely inspired to write “Sanditon” her last unfinished novel. Jane also visited, her Aunt, Jane Monk, just up the road from St Mary de Haura. She lived in the now ruined house of Buckingham Park. The facade of this building has been preserved and incorporated into the houses along Norman Crescent, off Woodview in Shoreham-by-Sea.

The materials are cheap and light to carry and can be adapted to suit people with limited hand strength.

Invitation to a Sculptural Ball

Could you do with some escapism in South Sussex? Here’s a one-off sculpture project you could be involved with. It suits beginners or people wanting motivation to create. The materials used are mainly paper based, so are cheap and light to carry and can be adapted to suit people with limited hand strength.

For a theme, we will be travelling in time back to Regency Worthing, creating characters who might attend a ball at the Assembly Rooms. Get inspired by a visit to Worthing Museum and see their fabulous textile exhibition. Or indulge your imagination watching and sketching from stills during a Jane Austen film on a wet Winter’s day.

Eccentric our classes always are, with some hilarity, and this might be just what the doctor ordered this Spring.
